I have a new-old-stock NOS American Lock Co. Mfg./Junkunc Bros. US Brass Padlock with 9" chain, 2 keys and original box. This vintage U.S. military-grade padlock is marked as manufactured by Junkunc Brothers Company successors to the American Lock Company.
The American Lock Company was founded in 1912 by John Junkunc, who had arrived from his native Hungary several years before where he worked as a railroad machinist in Boise, Idaho. In his spare time, he loved to invent and to improve things mechanically. He designed and built a number of gadgets and small tools, including the first known combination padlock. Fellow workers were so fascinated with the keyless padlock that the young inventor was literally "snowed under" with orders. He eventually had to resign his regular job with the railroad and devote his time to "manufacturing" combination padlocks. Several years later, he moved to Chicago where he married and set up manufacturing operations in the basement of the family home on 76th Street.
He continued to develop and market various types of padlocks with much of the company's production during World War II built to specifications of various government and war agencies. The company eventually moved to a new modern facility in Crete, IL in the 1960s. In 2003, American Lock was acquired by rival Master Lock Co. and moved to Milwaukee, WI. where it continues in name only as a Master Lock brand.
This particular padlock was marketed as difficult to pick given the uniqueness of its keyway. The standard keyway has only a single V-shaped groove. There are three restricted keyways, all pretty rare, which have a second groove opposite the first. This padlock features a second groove to accommodate double bitted keys. $35
