The JDM Toyota Hiace Regius is a luxury wagon that was produced for the Japanese market only. They took their reliable Hiace van and turned it into a luxury 8 passenger wagon. It has fulltime 4WD (transfer case), 4 wheel ABS and 4 wheel independent suspension. It handles as well as my Honda Civic. The 3RZ-FE 4 cylinder engine paired with the A43-DF automatic transmission is virtually bulletproof. This is the same engine used in the US for the 4 Runner and Tacoma of the same era. Parts are not a problem. It does a little better than 21 mpg on the highway which is respectable. I also found the original, complete Toyota service manual for this vehicle in Japan and have translated all 1,300 pages into English. This is invaluable as it contains all specifications and repair instructions for every system in the wagon. Additionally I have the owner’s manual in English.
The interior has dual climate control and it is very quiet on the road. The audio system is an Eclipse AVN-R7 which is a great system (radio, TV, phone, Bluetooth, DVD/CD, navigation) but has limited functionality in the US as it was made for Japan. Not that big a deal to me but Crutchfield has a respectable replacement for around $350.
I purchased this vehicle from Ottoex in November of 2024. It has obviously been loved and garaged its entire life. The finish is immaculate. No rust. No dents. Ottoex is very picky about the vehicles they bring from Japan and check them out thoroughly before sale. In addition to their work I had my mechanic go over it with a fine tooth comb and replaced all belts, hoses, fluids, air filter, wiper blades and installed a larger amp battery. I replaced the highway tires that were on it with a set of new Toyo Celsius A/W 215/70R15 tires in September as well. I would not hesitate to jump in this van and drive it anywhere.
I have lovingly done the conversion myself. I removed the seats with the idea that someone might want to convert it back to a passenger van at some point. All parts for the seats are intact and undamaged and seat and floor mats are perfect. You could convert this back to an 8 passenger van in an afternoon. All camper components are modular and bolted to the vehicle at existing bolt locations. No holes have been drilled in the vehicle. Here are the camper specs:
36 x 84 twin bed that converts to seating front and rear
4” Hilux high quality foam cushions
Sink with 12 v electric pump
5 Gallon fresh and gray water
Ecoflow River 2 Pro 768 Wh power source
Alpicool CF35 ac/dc refrigerator
One burner butane stove
Battery powered cooling fan
200w electric heater
Thetford porta potti
5v exhaust fan with solar battery pack
Removable table
Factory privacy curtains all around
Screens for front windows and rear pop-out
Reflectix window insulation all windows
I designed it for a solo traveler but two small people could manage if they are friendly. It is titled in Colorado and all import fees have been taken care of. So, why am I selling it? That is a story best told over a cup of coffee…
