Let's talk about tone - there are really only two camps these days: digital IR kinda rigs and tube tone purists. Of the tube tone folks, the big two choices in the high-gain world are Marshall and Mesa Boogie. While I love the sound of a cranked Marshall, I appreciate the swiss-army-knife versatility of the Mesa Boogie, and imho - this amp may be one of the best gigging choices for the rocker who has to cover a lot of tonal territory.
First off, let's look at power - this is 100 watts of wallpaper-tearing 6L6 tube power, switchable to 60 watts for when you're gigging outside of the New York Coloseum. You want headroom, you got it. Don't like 6L6s? Flip a switch and change 'em out to EL34s.
Next let's look at channels - 3 completely separate channels, controlled by footswitch that EACH have 2 settings to maximize your tone for that channel. The standard progression is clean, driven and crunchy - who needs a board full of expensive boo-tiki effects pedals when you've got this kind on tonal control built into the amp? Amazing!
How about effects handling and special features? Turn off the speakers and use headphones or plug into a mixing / recording board! You got an adjustable effects loop for any mod pedals you could want PLUS an actual spring reverb tank in the bottom of the amp. You can adjust the reverb level individually on each channel. Super versatile!
Durability? This amp is old enough to buy a round of drinks anywhere in the US and has kept pumping power for all those years. Keep in mind this is a HAND BUILT 100% USA Made amp - not "designed in US but built by child slave labor in Malaysia". Look, find another amp that's 100 watts, 2x12s, 3 channels, ALL TUBE and Made in the US at this price point. You can't, that simple.
I'm an old AF rocker who has tried them all - I've gigged regularly with Mesa Nomad 45s, 55s, Mini-rectos and more. This brute is the king of Rock Tone at this price level hands down. Overall condition is VERY GOOD, a few small tolex dings but no wood showing anywhere. New tubes - Mesa, of course.
