Happy New Year. I hope you’re ready to meet your new friend?
I have an absolutely breathtaking, fully restored, antique, hand-carved 4/4 violin. It’s a rescue [fully restored from broken pieces] and it was worth every minute of my time — it’s beautiful, with big sound and a it’s a one of a kind creation. I also enjoyed restoring it.
There is a hand-scribed label which reads, “Made by Frank Weirich [as best as I can decipher] Griswold Iowa”
There are initials on the label which I’m not totally sure of what they are and the date 6/10 [which Im assuming to be June of 1910 but it is uncertain]. I’ve also labeled my own name above that as I’m the one who restored it and essentially rebuilt it.
From scrap and busted materials back to its former glory — or better perhaps.
I’ve provided detailed photos of much of the restoration work performed on this violin and am happy to answer any questions you might have about the instrument. The violin has had a complete overhaul and is a great instrument — if I do say so myself.
It’s a classic hand-carved American fiddle. Fat belly with beautiful arches which create a wonderful full tone. It’s a loud violin and very appealing as a fiddle, as I do think it was carved for the hoedown. It would be great for a hard fiddle player.
Features this violin boasts include:
Spruce top and maple back — fully hand-carved and custom-built.
It has a very interesting and attractive spirit varnish applied in a chaotic style which is like a pool of refractions and shimmer. I have redone the varnish as the original varnish was very thin and it needed a better coating. Can’t tell you what it sounded like before varnishing it, as it was not in any type of playable condition when I got it and I only have heard it since I varnished it. It sounds great and looks just as good and has a more resilient finish.
A fully carved, expertly fitted three star ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Teller Germany bridge. Three stars means maximum sound conductivity, sharp responsiveness and superior resistance to warpage.
A torte orchestra tonal-color mute.
D’addario Zyex strings.
A new Wittner rosewood [colored] composite tailpiece with built-in fine-tuners, ensuring a proper setup and intonation with style appeal. A true 1 to 1/6 string ratio for a proper setup. The tailpiece really sets the instrument off — worth every penny for the color and yes, it costs significantly more because it’s fancy looking.
Freshly resurfaced fingerboard, heavily seasoned for richness and longevity.
I’ve added a top-shelf sound-post purely for the glory of maximum sound conductivity and because it’s just better that way. And who would argue with that?
Fitted antique tuning pegs keeps it legit and representing.
Case and bow and accessories are included in the price but I will knock off $100 if you only want the violin.
