This is an heirloom guitar that I am selling because of a downsize move. This is for sale locally and on guitar forums so it could sell without notice. This guitar is 19 years old and except for the mentioned tail finish spot, which occurred when the end-pin was drilled), it's almost factory mint. Video located on YouTube. The SJ is perfectly suited for finger style and solo guitarists, and offers enough versatility for flat-pickers to enjoy. This instrument affords the player exceptional balance of tone across the scale and crystal-clear note articulation. Its slightly smaller size makes it comfortable to hold and play, yet it maintains a commanding voice and powerful projection. The 5-piece neck allows for remarkable playability and sustain. These characteristics have made the SJ Applegate’s most popular guitar model. There is amazing player feedback due to the soundport.
If you've never played an Applegate before - and most people haven't, since the Minnesota-based luthier only builds a handful of guitars a year - this 2006 SJ would be quite a first introduction. An incredible instrument with a remarkably resonant voice, the SJ combines a Carpathian Spruce top with East Indian Rosewood back and sides for a natural tone that's rich, full-bodied, and complex, with lots of low-end and crystalline highs. The SJ is a mid-sized body, not unlike an OM, but with a bit of extra depth, allowing it to sit low on the player's lap and encouraging you to play for hours on end.
Brian Applegate has nearly 25 years of experience as a luthier, including 2 years spent working alongside one of his mentors, Jim Olson. The Applegate SJ pays homage to the Olson SJ with a similar body shape and bridge. This Carpathian Spruce – East Indian Rosewood Applegate SJ has a beautiful musical voice with lovely overtones, a punchy bass, smooth midrange and trebles that sustain with clarity.
