This is one of two Mason & Hamlin Model BB currently available. This is the younger of the two.
Mason & Hamlin is one of the great piano builders that started it all in the American Northeast. Along with Steinway, Chickering, Knabe, Sohmer, and others, they innovated, collaborated, and refined the instrument into what we know as the modern piano.
The Mason & Hamlin 7’ BB semi-concert grand was a favorite performance piano in many North American schools in the 20th Century. It is loved for its huge bass, rich cello and tenor, and treble sustain.
Built like a tank, they could endure many years of hard institutional playing. And because of the materials and construction quality, they were worth rebuilding, remaining in service for generations.
During this period in the 1990s, the pianos were fitted with full Renner actions, of the same caliber as the great European grands, including the Steinways from Hamburg.
This BB has had a soundboard repair and is in good condition. Soundboard cracks are common in dry environments and are usually fairly minor repairs.
It’s in good condition and could be a formidable instrument for the right player. If you’re looking for an iconic, powerful, rich American sound with impressive dynamics at a more budget-friendly price, this is worth an audition.
