If you see this ad the bike is still available, if I let the ad get stale by not re-posting don’t let that deter you. Just a couple quick photos for now.
Not the lowest-mile or most dirt-ready KLR you'll find but if you want a KLR for STREET use I'm convinced you won't find a better one of any year or generation.
2005 model, I bought from original owner in 2011 @6500 miles. Colorado bike since new. Always garaged.
Bought specifically for around town/foothills riding, not dirt.
Previous/original owner put clear vinyl protection on gas tank and side panels at contact areas when new, still on.
Modifications:
"Euro" switch cluster: Has headlamp on/off/running-lights switch so you can kill the headlamp when needed, separate high-beam flasher, replaces stock turn signal switch with push-to-cancel switch. Plug-and-play with original wiring. Stock cluster comes with bike.
Front brake: stock front is weak on the 1st-gen KLR. Two upgrades: 1) Big brake kit. Fairly expensive, makes a big difference. 2) Galfer HH-compound brake pads. Not expensive but makes an even bigger difference.
Suspension: 1) Progressive Suspsension fork springs, custom-length spacers to set sag for 200-220lb rider, 5wt fork oil, 2) Forks slid up 1/2" in clamps for fractionally quicker steering, 3) Adjustable fork caps for preload adjustments.
Rear shock is very good for street-only riding so I left it alone.
Rear LED brake light/flasher and dichroic yellow H4 headlamp bulb for improved visibility in traffic.
Gearing: Up one tooth on the front sprocket, down one on the rear for better street gearing.
Exhaust: “Squeaky” OE baffle removed, aftermarket exhaust tip attached, improves low-mid response, mileage, sounds good, not loud.
Bar-end weights: A set from a V-Strom 650 was the only set that made a difference, kept them on.
Handlebar riser, 1-1/2”
Center stand for maintenance.
MSR shift lever and upgraded steel footpegs
Original skid plate, brush guards, handlebar, etc.
Maintenance:
Chassis lube (all pivots/cables), oil/filter, clean air filter every 2500.
All tire changes done at Woody Wheel Works + truing when needed.
Rear suspension linkages removed/regreased, new chain & sprockets installed at 18k.
Bike is improved in important ways for street riding. My use has been round town and around front range foothills, gets 65-70mpg under those conditions, would be less if used for highway or off-road. For use as an adv bike it’s basically a clean slate.
Can be seen where we live between Evergreen and Conifer, or in the Golden area, where we have a rental storage unit (see map). Clean Colorado title in my possession. Contact me by text or email to work out a meeting.
