Background information about the model:
Call it a Cruiser, a Tourer, or a new type of Sport Bike — whatever! The CB900C was produced for three years — 1980-1982 (in 1983 the displacement was increased to 1000), and is derived from Honda’s high-performance CB750K and CB900F models which employ a chain rather than a shaft for the final drive.
It’s uniqueness lies in its dual-range transmission which results in a total of 10 speeds utilizing another shaft in a bolt-on housing behind the transmission to transfer power from the engine’s counter shaft on the left side where the chain was to the final shaft-drive unit on the right side where a bevel gear turns the driveshaft. Honda borrowed this final shaft-drive unit from the GL1100 to use on the CB900C (it’s also used on their CX500 and GL1000 models). When in High Range, engine speed is reduced by 500 rpm at highway cruising speeds — and fuel consumption by as much as 16 percent. In fifth gear and Low Range, the CB900C's engine spins at 4378 rpm at 60 mph (using a 5.26:1 gear ratio for mountain or urban conditions); in fifth gear High Range it turns at only 3745 rpm (employing a 4.50:1 rear ratio for economical cruising). High and Low ranges are selected via a separate shift lever positioned slightly above and behind the transmission’s 5-speed lever. In reality, no one would actually run through ten gears. Rather, the regular 1 thru 5 gears would typically be used with the sub-transmission set to Low Range (its lever positioned downward). Once at cruising speed, the lever for the sub-transmission would then be shifted up into High Range.
