Professional jazz pianist
— Performed at Jazz at Lincoln Center and with Delfeayo Marsalis —
A lot of piano players learn bits and pieces on their own, but eventually reach a point where it’s hard to keep progressing without a clear system.
Trying to improve your piano playing but feeling overwhelmed by random YouTube lessons and scattered advice?
If you're looking for a clear, organized approach to understanding harmony, improvising, and improving at the piano, you're in the right place.
My name is Will Fulkerson, and I'm a professional jazz pianist and educator with a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano from Florida State University.
I teach online via Zoom and work with students all over the world, including many in Denver.
I specialize in helping students understand how music actually works, showing how the different pieces of music theory and piano playing fit together into one clear system.
In our lessons we work on things like:
• improvisation
• music theory
• harmony
• technique
• learning and playing music without relying on sheet music
While at FSU I studied and performed with musicians such as Leon Anderson, Scotty Barnhart, and Marcus Roberts. Since then I’ve shared the stage with artists including Delfeayo Marsalis, Jamison Ross, Nick Finzer, and Dave Potter, and have performed at venues including Jazz at Lincoln Center (Dizzy’s Club) and The Velvet Note.
I’ve also worked as a jazz pianist at Disneyland in California, and as a private piano teacher in New York City and Atlanta.
I’ve spent my career performing and teaching professionally, and I enjoy helping students reach musical breakthroughs that previously felt out of reach.
— How the lessons work —
I’ve developed a clear progression that helps students build real musical understanding in a practical, approachable way. We start with the fundamental concepts that explain how harmony works at the piano, then apply those ideas to real music so they become second nature. From there, lessons naturally expand into improvisation and jazz concepts for students who are ready to go further.
Because of my own professional training, I also place a strong emphasis on healthy, efficient piano technique. While living in New York I studied the Taubman approach to piano technique with Edna Golandsky, a leading authority on tension-free movement at the piano. This background allows me to help students develop more natural movement at the keyboard and address tension or discomfort when it arises.
— Lessons are often a great fit for —
• adult piano players who want to take their playing to the next level
• musicians who want to deepen their harmonic understanding
• classical players who want to play without relying on sheet music
• producers or songwriters who want stronger piano skills
Lessons are primarily geared toward adults, though I occasionally work with motivated teenage students (around 14+) who already have a solid musical foundation.
Students who get the most out of lessons are the ones who enjoy practicing and are excited to keep improving week to week.
— Scheduling —
Lessons are held weekly, with some students choosing additional lessons depending on their goals. Scheduling is generally flexible from week to week depending on availability, and tuition is billed monthly.
— Online lessons —
Lessons take place online via Zoom. Most students position their camera so I can see both their face and the keyboard, though the setup is very simple — you don’t need multiple cameras or complicated equipment.
Because I’ve trained my ear since age 4, I can identify every note you play just by listening. When we’re working closely on technique, a simple side view of the keyboard works perfectly.
