I've been doing handiwork for homeowners exclusively for about three years. Before that, I worked as a commercial metal and wood fabricator/installer/CAD person, a residential cabinet builder and installer, and a murphy bed expert. Before that, I co-owned and ran a metal fabrication shop (commercial and residential) for almost a decade. I can definitely read a tape measure.
