Hi, my name is Kent. After putting up holiday lights the past few years I started installing Govee, Cinoton, and other brands of permanent lights. After installing for more than a half dozen houses, I’ve learned the challenges of varying architecture, where cords can be spliced, the strongest ways to attach, how to hide, tuck and minimize the appearance of cords. As well as some customization for changing the distance between lights and keep as much consistency as possible, and how much time it adds to customize and adapt to various homeowner preferences and budgets.
The average time is 8-10 hours to install. Certain customization like changing the spacing of lights will add more time. That’s for front side and partway down both sides of larger houses (over 100 feet of light strands) with lower and upper level, multiple peaks, etc. Ranch style (100 foot set) could take only 4-6 hours. Some brands/sets allow up to 200 feet of lights from one outlet. Lighting more than 200 feet (to light sides and back of larger houses) is possible to be synced in the app with Govee, but plugged in from outlet in different location may need a waterproof enclosure, depending on the brand.
Govee is one of the most customizable/DIY friendly for different architecture of houses and includes two longer (12 ft) cords and 2-3 shorter (4 ft) extension cords for gaps, peaks, and jumps from lower to upper level. They provide lots of extra screws and 3M stickers. I’ve also worked with similar quality, less expensive brands like Cinoton and Edishine, which are mid-range and include extension cords for gaps. And two lower end brands, which are one continuous strand and not recommended for multi-level homes.
My rate for permanent light installation:
$35 per hour for more simple ranch style homes not requiring tall ladders, $45/hour for larger/ medium difficulty, and $55/hour for two+ story homes with more complexity, customization, and planning time involved. Photos showing under eaves and where lights can go will help to estimate the difficulty, time, and cost.
