After 17 years of ownership, its time to pass "Chancho", the syncro camper, on to new adventures. For those who don't know: Syncro means All Wheel Drive. These are much more rare than the regular 2WD Vanagons. In the low gear, with the rear dif locked, this van can go anywhere. I've accessed fire roads in BLM and National Forest lands to wild camp self-contained in some of the most remote parts of the American West. This past February I toured Texas around Austin, then over to Tucson for desert camping, back through Flagstaff, and back to Denver.
Very well maintained, worn out parts always upgraded.
Stock motor, 2.1 L. Major service: valves and gaskets around 25000 miles ago.
4 speed plus granny gear manual transmission, new clutch within 20000 miles.
Rebuilt Transmission around 30000 miles ago, hardened third gear slider and slightly taller 4th. Cruises at 70-75 mph.
New starter. Upgraded LED headlights with new glass lenses. So Much Better than stock!
New tires less than 10000 miles. Yokohama Geolanders, much more quiet on the road. larger than stock 15's, including spare. Modified spare clamshell to fit the full size matching spare.
New brakes, new shocks, upgraded bushings. Rolls and steers steady at any speed.
Rear differential locker, new Decoupler. This makes it a "2 Knob" van.
Coolant lines replaced with stainless steel piping and manifolds.
Interior comfort features: Leather wrapped steering wheel, beefy manual window cranks, lockable steel center console.
Rock and Roll bench bed. Removable camper cabinet with sink and stove, storage and water (6 gallons).
220 watts of Sunpower Solar panels on roof racks. Battleborn Lithium battery, 1500 watt true sine wave inverter.
Note on the Odometer: Shows 90000(ish) miles. There is a sticker in the doorjam that says "Odometer replaced at 135000". When I bought it, back in 2008, the odometer showed 35000. I've put not quite 60000 on it in my 17 years of ownership. Actual mileage unknown.
The less than great: I never got around to painting it. Body is sound, but rough. Scars, scratches and dents from over 30 years of adventuring. Some rust in windows that needs repair. Crack in windshield, below drivers view, so not worth fixing at this time.
The take away: A ready to drive anywhere, self contained camp anywhere, road trip vehicle that gets nearly 20MPG. For the enthusiast, its ready for body work to make it Shine in the color of your choice.
NOTE: I have CarFAX report to share. I will not pull any other reports.
