Two years ago, I serviced this nice Honda , 4-stroke, 5 hp outboard trolling motor, long shaft, BF-5A and I have not used it since.
This is an oldy, well-built, trolling motor that will work well behind a sail boat, or a fishing boat. It has a long shaft (22.5”)
This motor has very little “plastic” parts in it. If you compare this OLD motor to the current model, you will find out that they have not changed much over all these years. Frame, body, engine size, weight (60 lbs) are all about the same
I have the service manual for this Honda outboard motor in PDF format. I can provide you a copy of it.
For comparison, you will find the price and specification for the current year model Honda BF-5A at the following site:
This one-owner motor was BARELY used and it shows. So, I went through it and serviced anything and everything that I could think of as follows:
Changed lower gear case oil and installed a new water pump impeller.
Changed engine oil.
Cleaned the spark plug.
Removed, checked, and cleaned the fuel pump.
Lubed and greased everything.
Changed all the fuel hoses.
Checked and adjusted the intake and exhaust valve clearances.
Took the carburetor off, cleaned, and over-hauled it.
Followed the tune up procedure in the service manual and adjusted the carburetor for its best performance.
This motor starts right away, shifts smoothly, and is ready for use. It comes with a small 3 gallon external gas tank.
We can also take it for a “test drive” behind your boat at the local lake. Or, we can test it in a water barrel in my back yard.
