A mid-century walnut chair designed by Folke Ohlsson for Dux Inc. of Sweden.
Dux Furniture was founded in Malmo, Sweden in 1926 by Efraim Ljung. Originally Dux focused on and made their name as the go to brand for comfortable mattresses. By the 1950s they hired several architects and designers to begin producing furniture in a style they called “Scandinavian Modern”. One of those very talented designers was Folke Ohlsson (1919-2002). Ohlsson became the Dux pioneer that moved to California in 1953 and founded the USA version of Dux Inc. in California. He was a renowned designer with several furniture patents as well as awards from King Gustav VI of Sweden. All of the Dux products continued to be made in Sweden and shipped to the United States. Dux is still in business today, based in Malmo, Sweden.
Ohlsson’s designs were the most popular and sought after of all of the Dux designers. His pieces were a graceful blend of Scandinavian curves and modern simplicity.
This Ohlsson piece is made of walnut and is from the mid-1950s to early 1960s. It is a masterpiece with its classic Ohlsson curves. It is also perfectly angled and is very comfortable. The base has new rubber straps and metal clips to support the high density foam base. The back is supported by wooden spindles. It has been professionally re-upholstered in a fabric by Knoll. A sample with info is provided with the chair. Underneath is the original DUX tag.
This chair is in excellent vintage condition. The upholstery is new. The foam insert is new 3” high density foam. The rubber straps are new and provide excellent support. The wood is walnut with beautiful color and grain. It has the most minor signs of wear. It was well taken care of.
It measures 24 inches at its widest by 27 inches deep by 27 inches to the top of the back. The seat cushion height is 15 inches.
This is a classic, mid-century chair by a renowned designer, sure to be a focal point in any room it occupies.
