A mid-century Scandinavian recliner with adjustable ottoman.
This adjustable chair and ottoman are from the 1960s and were most likely made in Sweden or Norway. There is no mark so we can’t be sure of the maker. It is very similar to the 1962 Combi Star chair and ottoman designed by Arnt Lande for the Norwegian furniture maker Stokke. The shape of the arms is especially Stokke-like. Their furniture was sold all over the world by Westnofa. The attribution of this chair is made more confusing by the fact that the reclining mechanism underneath is like the version designed by Folke Ohlsson and made by DUX of Sweden, even though the arms of the chair are not DUX-like.
At some point, maybe either Stokke changed their reclining mechanism, or DUX changed the shape of the arms of their chairs, from the style you see most often. The overall look and build of the walnut part of the chair make me lean strongly towards a Stokke chair.
In any case, this is a reclining, mid-century chair with adjustable ottoman. The wood is probably walnut. It has 8 notches in the mechanism underneath for a wide range in the reclining angle. The ottoman can be tilted as well to provide a comfortable position when the chair is tilted. The beautiful teal upholstery is original. There is a matching head pillow for support and comfort.
The overall footprint of the chair is 30 inches deep by 27 wide by 39 high to the top of the back. The ottoman measures 21 inches by 17 by 16 high,
This chair and ottoman are in excellent vintage condition. It was used and enjoyed and at over 60 years old, it has received some beautifully done, minor stitching repairs. There are some small hand stitched repairs on the back corners. There is one small repair to the seat. See images 11 and 12.
The reclining mechanism works beautifully. The wood has been oiled lightly to relieve it from dryness.
This is a classic mid-century reclining chair with adjustable ottoman from 1960s Scandinavia. It will make a strong statement in any room it occupies.
It can be admired and sat in at the address in the listing.
