A mid-century 4 drawer chest designed by Paul McCobb for the Linear Group of Calvin Furniture.

Paul Winthrop McCobb (June 5, 1917 – March 10, 1969) was an American modern furniture designer, textile designer, painter, and industrial designer. Melding function with style, Paul McCobb was one of the leading designers of his time. McCobb said, “Design appeal is based on integrity of form, simplicity of line and true organic function.” Today, McCobb’s works are held in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Brooklyn Museum, among others.

Calvin Furniture was a Grand Rapids, Michigan-based contract furniture manufacturer, active from 1953 to 1973, known for producing mid-century modern pieces for designers like Paul McCobb and Kipp Stewart. The company, a significant part of Grand Rapids' history as the "Furniture City," focused on creating high-quality, Scandinavian Modern-influenced furniture.

This piece is #408 from the Linear Group of Calvin Furniture. The Linear Group was designed by Paul McCobb and was produced from the mid-1950s to early 1960s. The line featured distinct angular designs, contrasting colors, and elevated details like aluminum strips and pulls, distinguishing it from McCobb's more famous, less ornamented Planner Group.

It speaks to McCobb’s description of form integrity, line simplicity and organic function. Its mid-century style is impeccable and beautifully done.

This piece measures 36 inches wide by 18 deep by 34 ¼ high. The inside of the top drawer has the foil Calvin Furniture sticker. On the back, on the top right corner you will find “408” embossed. It has the original brass pulls and the signature aluminum strips in front.

This piece is in excellent vintage condition. The walnut has beautiful color and grain. It has been oiled to relieve it from the Colorado dryness. The drawers slide easily. There is a small area where the right front leg has been rubbed, see image 11.

We also have the smaller #406 Linear chest in this shop. These two pieces have been together for about 70 years.

They can be admired and purchased at the address in the listing. Delivery is available.
