I have a Vintage Chouinard Alpine Camp North Wall Pick-Hammer Combo Climbing Piolet that is in excellent condition. Vintage Chouinard ice axes, especially the iconic "Zero" and "North Wall Hammer," revolutionized ice climbing in the 1970's by introducing curved picks and specialized designs (like the pick-hammer combo) for steep, technical ice, shifting from traditional mountaineering tools to specialized vertical climbing gear, with wooden shafts (hickory and bamboo) being prized collector's items before the shift to metal. This pick-hammer has a “Buckeye” quality American hickory handle which gives unexcelled balance, dampens vibration, and is strong and reliable. Made in the U.S.A.🇺🇸 $100

Traditional ice axes had straight picks that often popped out under weight on steep ice. Partnering with Tom Frost, Yvon Chouinard developed a dramatically curved pick, allowing for better placement and a direct upward pull, making vertical ice climbing feasible and safer. Chouinard hammers were soaked for 24 hours in linseed oil to guarantee that the wood would be weather-proofed for years of use against the wetting, freezing, and drying conditions encountered in mountaineering. Chouinard Equipment (later Black Diamond) pushed boundaries until the company's restructuring in 1989, leaving a legacy of innovation in mountaineering tools.
