Are you interested in providing your children with a unique advantage and experience to refer to on applications for employment and college?

Would you like to do your part in helping make this world a better place?

Are you interested in providing you or your family, as well as a family in another country, “the experience of a lifetime”?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may be just the volunteer family, parent, or couple we’re looking for. It doesn’t take much but the impact will last a lifetime.

And if you are a student interested in this experience first-hand, this can be a great opportunity for you as well!

“There is nothing more important than getting people from other countries to the United States and people from the United States to other countries because whatever differences we might have about policy or various actions that we take, there is no better way to bridge differences than for people to know people from various countries…and there’s no better way to start that than with young people and with high school students.” Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, July 01, 2005

Online tutors needed! (Denver Area)

Description:

TutorChatLive.org is currently recruiting volunteers to tutor online starting when we relaunch the site on January 18, 2010.

The main responsibility is tutoring students who request our free, live help. Our service is open and available to anyone that can access the website. Tutors work from the comfort of their own homes/offices on their computer and chat one-on-one with students in an instant messaging-type program. Tutors have many tools at their disposal such as the ability to link the student with online resources, draw on a virtual whiteboard, and transfer the chat to other available tutors online should they need further assistance.

Tutors can tutor in any subject area for which they have knowledge of, at least at the middle school/high school level. Math/science is of high demand, but not required.

We are very flexible with scheduling but request at minimum that tutors be online for two hours a week and commit to six months of tutoring with our service.

If you are a high school student in need of community service hours, we will gladly provide those.

Application:

Please apply online at our (soon to be redesigned) website at http://www.tutorchatlive.org.

Once we receive and review your application, you will be contacted to set up a phone meeting where we will discuss more about our program and give you the opportunity to ask questions.

Next, telephone orientations will take place late November/early December at which point we will teach tutors the ins and outs of the site and chat program for preparation for our launch on January 18, 2010.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at admin@tutorchatlive.org

We hope to hear from you soon!

Colorado Puppy Rescue needs YOU (Aurora)

Colorado Puppy Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit, no-kill, shelter-less rescue based out of Aurora, Co...and we need new Volunteers and Foster families for our puppies. For those of you who don't know much about Colorado Puppy Rescue please feel free to visit our website for tons of valuable information about volunteering and fostering opportunities at www.coloradopuppy.org . CPR has been in operation since October of 2005. Since then we have rescued and found homes for well over 4,000 puppies.

Our mission is to rescue puppies from rural areas of Colorado, and New Mexico, as well as other areas of great need. While there are many local rescues that support the stray and homeless pet populations of Denver-local, we support those communities that have neither the facility, funding, personnel, or adoptive population to find these puppies homes. We hold our adoptions weekly from the Petco located one block north of the I25/Colorado blvd exit, just off Colorado blvd.

If you are looking for a way to feel great, give back, and even a way to meet new and fun people, please consider Colorado Puppy Rescue. As someone who started as a simple foster and volunteer a couple of years ago and has since become their Volunteer Coordinator, i can tell you this will be a very rewarding experience for anyone involved.

We will be holding our next New Volunteer Orientation on Monday, January 11th at 6:15pm at our Petco location. Please email me if you are interested in becoming a new volunteer and i can help get you set up!

Thanks so much for reading,

If you live in Colorado, you probably love the snow as it blankets our mountains, roads and sidewalks.

But that wintery weather presents a problem for Thornton's elderly and disabled population. If sidewalks aren't cleared, they cannot safely receive their mail, prescriptions and Meals on Wheels.
If you'd like to combine your love of winter weather with your volunteering spirit, become a Snowbuster!
Snowbusters are assigned to one or more residents for the duration of the snow season. They have 36 hours after each storm to shovel the sidewalks of their residents. (Driveways are not included in the service.) If the storm exceeds eight inches, there is a 48 hour timeframe.

Be a voice for Denver's community trees!

Canvass part of a Denver neighborhood at your convenience anytime between now and February 8 (preferably sooner than later). Go door-to-door, leaving materials to encourage residents to apply for free trees to plant along the street next to their property. These trees usually sell for over $100. But through our Denver Digs Trees program, we provide them for free in Denver's under-treed neighborhoods. Applications for our spring street trees are due February 15, so we need to spread the word now!

As a Neighborhood Canvasser, you'll help spread the word and get hundreds of new trees in our community, which helps the environment and provides a valuable resource to underserved households. Also, this is a great way to see many of Denver's neighborhoods and enjoy the outdoors.
No special expertise necessary. All materials and briefing information will be provided. You're welcome to pair up with a friend.
Everyday you are deciding how to present the world to your children. Your family will never forget the year that it's membership grew by one. Welcome Farina from Germany or Petcharat from Thailand or Jorge from Venezuela into your family and watch your horizons expand.

Pacific Intercultural Exchange has students from all over the globe eager to experience American culture while sharing their own with their host families and new friends. I will come to your home and help you choose a student with similar interests, hobbies and goals as your family. There are no typical host families. Empty-nesters, retired couples and single parents are all encouraged to apply.

If you want to open your heart and home to a student, I want to talk to you!

Did you know that 48% of youth in Denver will drop out of high school and that Colorado has the 28th highest dropout rate in the nation? Did you also know that providing an interested adult and a sense of the future can make a profound difference in that youth’s life? Colorado Youth at Risk (CYAR) is taking these alarming statistics head on by developing a mentor-based program for 9th to 12th graders in the Denver/Aurora area. CYAR mentoring programs improve these statistics dramatically. 95% of the youth mentored in CYAR stay in school. 93% of them graduate high school. CYAR has served more than 850 students and mentors in our one-on-one mentor programs over the past 16 years.

CYAR is not your ordinary mentoring program. Before a mentor is even paired with a young person, you go through some very powerful training. These teachings are not only designed to prepare you on how to better relate to teens, but how to better relate with yourself and everyone else in your life. The same type of life-altering training is also delivered to the youth and is what makes this program so dynamically different from other mentoring organizations.

For more information about CYAR or to become a mentor or volunteer, please contact

The POEM Research Study
(Pioglitazone Or Exercise to treat MCI)

The principal investigator for this study is Robert S. Schwartz, MD. This research study is approved by the Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board (COMIRB protocol #07-1215).

The IMAGE Group at the University of Colorado Denver is currently recruiting healthy men and women over the age of 55 who are experiencing mild memory problems.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether 6 months of exercise training or a study drug (Pioglitazone) can improve memory function. The study drug and exercise both help insulin in the body work better. Insulin is important to brain function. The goal of this research study is to find out whether improving insulin metabolism, using the study drug or exercise, can help slow declines in memory function compared to those who are not treated.

Research Study Qualifications:
Men and women over the age of 55 years of age
Mild memory problems
Slightly overweight and possibly "pre-diabetic"
Not using hormone therapy
Non-smokers
Not regulary exercising

Benefits for study volunteers:
Participants will receive, at no cost, information regarding their health status, including testing for memory function, diabetes, cholesterol, body fat and bone density. Eligible participants will also receive monetary compensation.
Sólheimar Eco-Village, founded in 1930, is the first community in the world where the so-called able and disabled people live and work together. Inspired by the theories of Rudolf Steiner, Sólheimar has focused on cultivating both the individual and the environment and it is the first community in Scandinavia to practice organic farming.
Today, Sólheimar (the home of the sun) is a charming village of about 100 inhabitants, renowned for its international, artistic and ecological atmosphere, which prides itself on its varied cultural, social and sporting activities. The village is only a one-hour drive from Reykjavik.
The volunteers will mostly work in the Ölur Forestry Centre (the only organic reforestation centre in Iceland) and in the Sunna Organic Cultivation Centre. During the project, other tasks may arise depending on the needs of the community. The work in Ölur, and in the village as well, will mostly consist in building paths and planting trees in Southern Iceland Farm Forest. The orphanage has a wide variety of courses for children ranging from infants to 18 years old.
For example, children between the ages of 6 to 12 will be provided with educational courses, and the older children are able to attend vocational training courses at the centre.
While special education helps to lessen the burden of children’s families by teaching the disabled to help themselves with personal activities, the vocational training programs
enable handicapped children to earn their living and be able to live independently in the future.
Volunteers will help organizing games and educational activities for children in the orphanage and exchanging with local volunteers or staff.
We need your help. Every Monday the Grant Avenue Street Reach Soup Kitchen serves over 500 people a hot meal. We are a 100% nondenominational, volunteer program. Come for an hour, a few hours, or the whole day. Come after work, or at lunch. Come every week, or twice a year. We start at 10am and are done around 6:30pm. WE ESPECIALLY NEED HELP AT THE END OF THE DAY. If you can stay until "the bitter end" we truly appreciate it because this is when we really are shorthanded.

We are located at 1600 Grant Street in the basement of St. Paul's church. You can just show up to help (and you are advised not to wear your Sunday best).

Please help the less fortunate and feel really good about yourself.

I am new to the city; looking for a volunteer opportunity in the area. I have cooked for up to 400, and am interested in putting my cooking skills to work. Does anyone know of a shelter, or another such organization that can use a talented pair of hands in its kitchen? I am very good with a tight budget, creative with limited ingredients, and I love to cook! I am comfortable in any size kitchen, and with small or large-scale equipment. I would like to volunteer 2-3 days a week, on an ongoing basis. Please e-mail if you know of any opportunities out there!
Thanks!
Unfortunately, I seem to need to edit this post...Anyone scrolling through the 'community' pages looking for a date...please don't bother. I can assure you I'm not interested, even if you are "a good cook too".

I'm the author of the Planetary Bill of Rights Project at http://www.PlanetaryBillOfRights.org/

It's essentially an Objectivist Bill of Rights, but instead of being for only the United States, it's for the whole world. The plan is also to refine it into being an Objectivist Constitution of negative government powers, i.e. limiting the powers of government by the involvement of a voluntary collective of individuals asserting their individual rights against government.

The world sure needs it, in fact we risk sinking into global marxist government without something like this.

I plan on making it my life's work to see this project become successful.

When we can get an organization started up, you might also find a place in it.
It will be headquartered in Colorado.

We need some legal advice and help, on how to structure it and start it up.

It's essential that you know what Objectivism is, and consider yourself one.

If you'd like to help, please contact me.

Support for disabled children on Bali Island
December 5 - December 19, 2009
March 20 - April 3, 2010

Bali Island is a densely populated island, with population more that 3 million people all together. The population is almost all Indonesian, 95% are of Balinese Hindu descent and could be describe as ethic Balinese. Bali is also a tiny, extremely fertile and dramatically mountainous island. It is only 140 km by 80 km. The tourism boom, which started in 1970s has brought many changes and has helped pay for improvement in roads, telecommunication, education and health. Though tourism has had some marked effects, Bali’s unique culture and custom has proved to be remarkably island. Bali disabled School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Bali and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. We would like to host foreign volunteers because we believe that their interaction with the children, during education and vocational classes and other therapeutic activities will be of great benefit as our students have little or no chances to meet and live with people from other cultures. The intercultural dimension that their presence will generate will also be welcomed and valued by the local staffs. The support that the volunteers will give to our teaching staff, particularly those teaching English, will be invaluable.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching basic conversation in English, helping teacher in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc . Volunteers' influence on students is expected to create a sense of knowledge of other realities of the disabled kids and other cultures in a way that improves their own perception of themselves and what they can achieve. Also to open the mind of international volunteers that the disabled students also need attention to face their future. It will also give opportunity for the international volunteers about the treatment that should be done by the families of disabled children.

For more details about this projects, please visit : www.cadip.org/volunteering-in-indonesia.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400, 604-628-7400

Cancer Survivors Rally to Support American Cancer Society

WHO – The American Cancer Society invites individuals who want to honor cancer survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) and caregivers, or pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer to join its Relay For Life of Thornton, scheduled for July 17, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Thornton Multipurpose Fields (108th and Colorado Boulevard). In 1985, Relay For Life began with one man who walked and ran around a track for 24 hours raising $27,000. This year, Relay For Life is coming to you in more than 4,800 communities.

WHAT – The Relay For Life of Thornton Kickoff Rally is where anyone – families, caregivers, cancer survivors, schools, companies, etc. – get together to kick off the annual Relay For Life of Thornton activities.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life is an overnight community celebration where individuals and teams camp out, barbecue, dance, and take turns walking around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer. At nightfall, participants will light hundreds of luminaria around the track in a moving ceremony to honor cancer survivors as well as friends and family members lost to the disease. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life represents hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. Because of events like this one, more people are celebrating more birthdays.
This project has been running successfully since 2004. The Youth House School is a small education center for disadvantaged street children and children coming from a poor fishing village, located in the outskirts of Hanoi. The international volunteers will help run the school and will be responsible for keeping the school clean, cooking free lunch for the children, and teaching them basic things about their countries, health, etc. The volunteers will also organize some leisure activities for youth after school. This is a time for cultural exchange and embracing new relationships. The international volunteers will work together with a team of local volunteers, led by a group leader.
The volunteers will teach around 15 children every day. Remember, the children are not used to rules and structure in their households, so volunteers must try to implement this by setting an example. The Youth House is also a place where young local people and international volunteers come to explore the cultural diversity, by teaching the children together or organizing leisure activities, such as taking the children to the swimming pool.
These activities are combined with projects to help disadvantaged people at the Fisher Village, who are very poor and live in slum-boats on the Red river. This is done by giving them food, medicines, water filters (for clean drinking water), toothpaste, second-hand warm clothes and free showers in winter, etc.
The Red River is the biggest river in Vietnam. The delta is located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. The city continues to expand with many people coming from the countryside into the urban area. This however, is an expensive endeavor with the government imposing a tax on people coming from the rural area to prevent a massive influx of people. Some people decide however to come despite this financial situation and thus must live in house boats at the river to escape from having to pay. Since they do not technically live in Hanoi they must pay for school which is usually free until the age of 12. The entire family must work hours that most people would consider inhumane. The children wander the streets begging and collecting rubbish. An entire family barely makes $2 a day.

Dear friend of the community,

On behalf of Colorado’s Black Sheep Junior Cycling team, I would like to extend an invitation to you and your company to become a sponsor for our 2010 season. Black Sheep Junior Cycling is a non-profit organization with a mission:

“To build a competitive team of dedicated junior cyclists who maintain a lifelong love of the sport, and who give back to the community that supported them.”
Black Sheep Junior Cycling is building cycling’s future, one youth at a time. We aim to
Provide youth with organized training and competition in a safe environment;
Bring our youth closer together through their common interest in sportsmanship and competition;
Provide positive role models that inspire greatness;
Instill lifelong habits of hard work, discipline, courage, determination, education, resourcefulness, positive attitude and teamwork;
Provide a level of coaching that matches each junior cyclist’s ability and aspiration—from beginner to international competitor;
Encourage junior cyclists to maintain a healthy balance between social, scholastic and athletic endeavors;

We have attracted top cycling talent like Tracy Matteson and Carlos Casali—both help coach our team. Tracy won the Colorado Senior Men’s time trial state championship in 2007, and Carlos is a Pro 1-2 racer. They, along with our other coaches, are role models that inspire our junior riders to set goals and achieve them.

We are looking for sponsors who are willing to donate any dollar amount to assist in covering our major expenses such as uniforms for the juniors, travel fees, nutrition, officials, equipment, insurance, trophies and administrative expenses. Your donation is 100% tax deductable.

The Black Sheep Junior Cycling team looks forward to building a strong partnership with your company that will enable us to fulfill the hopes and dreams of our youth.

I welcome any comments or questions regarding the details of your sponsorship and look forward to forming a mutually beneficial partnership.

Volunteering at HorsePower is an incredible and rewarding opportunity. It is much more than giving of your time, it is being a part of a child’s life. The volunteers at HorsePower are the backbone to our program.

Our riders depend on 1-3 volunteers during their weekend (Sat) sessions. It is amazing to see the impact that you can have in their lives. Without volunteers, our riders simply could not ride!

High School Students earn a certificate in community service, essential for college scholarship applications! We welcome community service needs as well.

Hello,

My grandfather recently had open heart surgery. He is 79 years old and is usually very active. But because of the surgery he has to stay in bed most/some of the time for the next 8 weeks. He has a nurse and physical therapist coming in each an hour a day for the 8 weeks, my family and I would like to have some one there with him during the day in till 3PM though. Is health insurance covers the nurse and therapist but not any sort of in home help. We don't need a nurse but just someone to help him get in and out of bed ( he isn't allowed to stand using is arms), lift things, and just provide general assistance.

I am looking for an organization that can provide volunteers for in home help for him. We DO NOT want to send him to a facility till he gets better. My uncle lives with him and works during the day at home and can't really help till 3PM. So there would be someone else at home.

Please let me know if you know of any where to access volunteers.

Thank you

Educational and therapeutic activities for disabled students in Ungaran

Ungaran Disable School was founded with the aim to cater for the needs of disabled children and youth in Ungaran and the surrounding areas. Moreover, this school is also aimed to encourage and motivate the disable children and youth to struggle for their future. The School is located in Ungaran Regency, Semarang. It is about 10 km south away from the city centre of Semarang.
The role of the volunteers will be assisting local teacher in classes like teaching very basic conversation in English, helping teachers in giving training on physical activities of the disabled students like making simple handicrafts, playing, doing simple sport etc .

Project dates: January 16 - January 30, 2010

For more details about this projects, please visit : www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-indonesia.htm
or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

This project is part of Cadip's International Volunteer Program: www.cadip.org

This year the hurricane Jimena has lashed the city of Guaymas leaving an important level of rain. 2009 is the year when it rained the most (in the last 50 years) and this caused an important damage to the population of Guaymas and to the city. The hurricane affected people of all backgrounds, leaving a lot of people in the middle of nowhere since they lost everything they had. Everything was affected, public buildings, leisure areas, houses, schools, there was no place that was not affected.
This international volunteer project is organized in order to help in the reconstruction of the city of Guaymas with the support of motivated volunteers. There are many things to be done since there were several areas seriously affected. We need help to clean beaches, to rebuild sportive spaces, to clean up parks and community spaces, to fix roads, to help in rural communities by giving health workshops.
After the hurricane, the children affected don’t have a place to continue their studies, they lost everything they had for their education: material, furniture, the roof collapsed and the walls were damaged because of the water and humidity. For that reason, at this first stage, the goal of the project is renovating and reconstructing two schools damaged by the Jimena Hurricane, so the children affected can return to their educative activities as soon as possible and in a clean and healthy environment, appropriate for their development and with the support of the international volunteers. This project will benefit 25 families for the first school and 180 families for the second school.
Volunteers will help with the reconstruction of the two schools affected. They will help with reconstruction activities such as painting walls, reforestation, and cleaning the schools. They will contribute to renovate these structures through scratching and painting walls, and will also do some artistic work such as painting murals on the walls of the schools with the help of local volunteers with landscapes and thematic appropriate for the children. The volunteers will also help planting trees and reforesting the affected area, making and putting signals and signs.
Age range: 18 and over

For more details visit: www.cadip.org/volunteer-in-mexico.htm or give us a call: 617-502-0400 (US); 604-628-7400 (Canada)

For volunteer opportunities in other countries click here: www.cadip.org

I am a student at The Community College of Denver. I am majoring in Human Services at CCD and next semester (January of 2010) I am going to be taking my first Practicum. This means I need a placement in the field of Human Services. This Practicum is basically an internship and requires 135 hours of working experience to complete it. I am interested to see if anyone or organization would be able to take on a student. I have completed a year of Human Services classes already and have the knowledge from personal experience as well to work with various populations; such as the homeless, domestic violence victims and mentally disabled, senior citizens and more. The only thing I require for this internship placement is a Supervisor to over see my work and sign off on my hours; as well as help me learn as much as I can about the field I am in. I am excited to be able to do my first Practicum and look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for your time.

Basically, I need help finding my placement since I am not having any luck on my own. Thank you again for reading and for giving any help you can.

Reaching out to Craigslist Community!! We have been apart of the Craigslist community for over 5 years. Over the yeARS THIS SITE HAS BEEN GOOD TO US AND WE LOVE IT! My husband and I decided to reach out and ask for help, as our family is in need. My husband lost his job over 6 months ago, laid off, and thrown into unemployment after 5 years of service. We have a house in north denver with our son and 3 dogs. We have barely been making it with what unemployment gives him, and we have learned to become quite frugal! Up until now, we could scrape by. Unemployment has an issue with his employers insurance and his benefits have been halted until the issue is resolved. We expected the issue to be resolved in a week or two. It has now been over a month and we are in dire need of help. Our 3 dogs we love very much. Our baby Wallace (our German Shepard) developed a dark film over his eyes, we were so afraid for him, but the vet was able to rid the infection with some drops and saline solution. Our Son brought home a pup 4 moths ago and we fell in love with her. Daisy, we named her, came down with Parvo the day after we named her. Well $1,500 later, and a near death experiance, she made it through and is now a part of our family. Now the poor girl has developed what we think is mange?? Poor thing is itching to no end. Today we may have to cone her. We are afraid to take her to the vet because of the fees, and our last BIG bill with the parvo. On top of that, our rent is overdue, we dont qualify for state benefits until the unemployment issues are resolved , our truck was repossed, and we are short on food. With a family of 3 and 3 dogs, we are sinking!!! What we are looking for is a hand up, not a hand out. If you can spare $'s God Bless You! We also need dog food, people food, refferal to agency that can help us?? ANYTHING HELPS when you have nothing. We are a proud family and it is hard to ask for help. We know times are tough for everyone out there, we just kinda of slid way behind. I assure you that we are real family, and we invite anyone interested to join us for coffee at our home. God bless all, thank you for reading! 720-377-7905 Erin

Due to the hazardous road conditions I will be unable to celebrate Christmas with my family in Kansas. I would very much like to help out someone or a charitable organization in need of help. I am a very able person (23 year old male, physically fit), capable of almost anything in reason. Examples of things I would like to help out with.... shoveling for the elderly, spending time with orphans, helping out at a local soup kitchen...etc... basically anything for someone who is truly in need this holiday.

If you are in need of help this Christmas I would love to donate my services to you. I look forward to hearing from you.

Re: I need Christmas help!

I think it's wonderful that you don't want to seem greedy and don't want your post to offend. Unfortunately, you ARE greedy and your post DOES offend.

People like you are the problem with this country today. It's not good enough to have "enough", you need to have MORE. It would be bad enough if you felt you/they couldn't be happy with what you have (which is a lot by some people's standards), and then went out of your way to apply yourself so they COULD have more. But you've obviously seen that fixing your nonexistant problem by expecting freebies is the way to do things in this day.

As far as them knowing the true meaning of Christmas - are you that brainwashed to think that the true meaning is commercialism? I'll assume you are, and tell you that it isn't. The true meaning of Christmas has nothing to do with plenty of presents, no matter what society tries to shove down our throats.

I'd wish you a "Merry Christmas", but I doubt that you'll be able have one anyway.

=============================

I have four girls 8, 5, 3 ,and 6 months. I thought I would be ok for christmas but i am afraid I need help. I am working but simply cannot afford anything more than the two gifts for each i bought. I have a very hard time asking for help, but i would like them to have a few more things than what i have. They believe in santa but know full well the true meaning of christmas, and I do not want them to hurt because i am financially strapped. Any stocking stuffers etc. would be greatly appreciated. I know everyone is struggling and do not want to seem greedy so please don't let this post offend.

God bless and Merry Christmas.
