The non-profit Mile High Community Band seeks musicians of all skill levels and ages in the Denver area who would like to learn a band instrument or improve their existing instrument skills, and participate in public concerts.

The band currently consists primarily of adults, but we're eager to include middle- and high-school age kids who may not have the option of learning an instrument through their school, or who want to further hone their skills.

We have 4 different bands at 4 different skill levels (Beginning, Intermediate, Concert, and Jazz). Music is more or less 'traditional' band music, so we can especially use more brass and woodwinds. We meet Thursday evenings at Jefferson High School in Edgewater (Lakewood) for rehearsals. Monthly memberships begin around $25-$35/month, but scholarships and instruments are available for those who need them -- no one who is interested will be turned away! Family discounts also available.

I have a ton of live experience and I have been in the studio several times. I play drums every day, so I have chops and I love to beat the shit out of my drums, but I know when to tone it down also.. I'm pretty tired of the stuff I'm hearing these days, and I mean to do something about it. I've been playing piano on and off for ten years, guitar for 8, and I've been into production the last 7 years. In a couple of weeks I will have a macbook pro which will be a huge step towards live performance.

Now, I need people to help me out...

My ideal project would be something along the lines of industrial/electronica/metal, but far more melodic than most industrial around. Think old school crystal method meets nine inch nails, meets some satriani and juno reactor with a heavy fear factory influence. This isn't set in stone, but I am serious about originality and passion. I also sing, and samples can be provided of all of my skills at work - overall production, guitars, keys, and vox.

A drummer is my main priority right now, but a keyboardist and guitarist are also needed. If you play more than one instrument, GOOD. I like having people around that can hop from guitars to keys, even if they are far more skilled in one than the other. This isn't necessary, however. In my mind, the keyboards can cover the needed low end, and adds some major bells and whistles. However, if you are a talented bassist and can add serious flair to the project, definitely get in touch with me.

I am always up for new ideas, and changing mine. If you are innovative, original, and passionate - no matter what your style, as long as you don't mind dark music - get back to me.

We have previously played a lot of the small venues around town; the Larimer Lounge, Herman's Hideaway, etc., so we are pretty familiar with the score around here, and we have a few connections here and there. We practice in a studio space we've rented in Lafayette, which has a kit already set up. There is generally a carpool from Westminster to the studio on practice nights.

We're looking for someone who is into the same sorts of music as we are (see our influences), has a relaxed personality, and will be willing to practice several times a week and be prepared to gig on weekdays and late at night when we can't get good time slots. We write pop songs, and like drum parts that are engaging and rhythmic - we're happy with the drum parts on our recordings, and while we are happy to experiment with new ideas, we aren't interested in heavy metal drumming/double bass pounding.

Dominant 7th

The misuse of this term is just about driving me insane.

Dominant = V.
Period. End of story. A dominant seventh chord is V7. That is the only chord that is the dominant seventh. Perhaps it is the only seventh chord that's diatonic in major, but obviously that's totally irrelevant. If you don't know what "V" means in regards to harmonic analysis, I bid you good day, thanks for clicking.

R + M3 + P5 + m7: this is a seventh chord. It can be a dominant seventh, but only if R=V.

The entire basis of music theory is the tonic-dominant relationship. If you go calling every seventh chord a dominant seventh you really don't know what the hell you're talking about, do you? I even see it printed in books; people just parroting things they've always heard and never analyzed or obsessed with formality. This term may be accepted but it is just plain wrong. Now you'll say - "oh, but by its very nature a 7th chord automatically becomes an instantaneous dominant regardless of any context, and otherwise it's an incidental arrangement of passing tones. I read that in a book!" Please. I recommend you actually listen to music instead of reading books, and also, welcome to the 21st century.

I would like to say that despite some of the animosity, this musician's page on craigslist is an entertaining and useful observation of the Denver music scene. Obviously, we cannot all agree on the aspects of a subjective artform such as music. Some people do not care for angst driven rock, but there is emotion in it and it is valuable to someone. The same can be said for any type of music. Although I am a rock artist, I enjoy many different styles of music(bluegrass is one my faves). My drummer really likes jazz. We somehow still find common ground, and make music together. I must say I feel for any of you affected by the many troubles of the local music scene. Be it drugs or alcohol, greedy bars, or uninspired band members; it is unlikely that anyone can make a living in the entertainment industry without being affected by at least one of these things. It's easy to be cynical about it all, and hard to be constructive.
That said, because this has become, and is a forum; I would like to offer some words. I'm sure someone will be pressed to respond in negative, but they will have missed my intent. We have some unique opportunities in this state that makes it a fairly good place to establish a musical act, as long as you are willing to put in the work. There are musical powerhouse regions like Austin and L.A. where the competition is so fierce, only polished pro's make the cut. These are great places to hear music, but I believe it is harder for a fledgling act to get started in these places because of the competition. Even SRV was a beginner at one time. Colorado does have a good scene for the fledgling acts. Not to say that the big time isn't here. You can find yourself at the PI in Nederland at the table next to Robert Plant, or bump into the Black Eyed Peas switching limos. I have. But it takes some time here to build a successful act, and that is what stops most bands. A good band in Colorado needs to build a great reputation. This means professionalism at every level possible. But expect to run into a lot of unprofessionalism. Face it, venues(or bars, or roadhouses, theatres whatever you call where it is you play) will not have your personal band in mind when making their decisions. Statistically, it takes 12 sales calls on average to gain one customer. You need to be tenacious. You need to keep your band on the venue's radar. If you let the feel bad shows get you down, you won't succeed. If you are playing for 1 barmaid or 7000 people, put it all out there for them. And have a good time.
Also, here is a golden ticket: DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME IN YOUR FRIENDS BASEMENT STUDIO. Save your money. Go to a reputable and recognized studio. I don't care if you or you're friend have the latest pro tools, tube preamps, and electrical engineering degrees, save up and use pro's. "Why? Our stuff sounds great! And it doesn't cost us much in the basement." you say? I'll tell you why: You buy more from a pro studio than just a great sounding recording. Reputable and professional studios(of which there are many in Colorado) are recognized in the industry you want to be in. Entertainment is about connections and the best place to start connections in musical entertainment is where the rock stars work. Plus, making a great sounding recording at a reputable studio will put you on cloud 9. Believe it. This industry needs bands! Do not lose faith. Use your home studio to hone your songs, and you will save money when you go to record for real.
Be realistic. If your art is strictly a component of a fringe subculture, then that is your identified consumer base and it will probably stay that way. Limit your art, and you limit yourself. If you make yourself appealing to a larger group, your opportunity for financial success will increase. Some call this selling out. I call it business. I bet Green Day doesn't care that their original core audience calls them sellouts. They commercialized their punk roots and made millions.
Don't let the age barrier scare you. Young sexy kids do well in rock, but if you think you are too old to succeed you are wrong. Good musicians are appreciated where good audiences reside. I thought my career was over when I turned thirty, I was sooooo mistaken. My career has become the dream I always wanted.
"Band seeking manager" - I know this too. You are tired of let downs and it is hard. Sorry to tell you the bad news, but the real management companies aren't here. You're going to have to do it yourself. A Colorado band will most likely just be giving a percentage of their little earnings away to a manager, for work they should do themselves. If you are going nationwide, have a professional show, gear, and you are on fire(see Rose Hill Drive), you might need a manager. But the manager model of yesteryear is over. You have at least a few people in your act, right? Share the work. Get it done. No one needs to hold your hand. Fliers are ok, we use them, but saving up and advertising in a real magazine will get you more for your money.
Lastly, and I know you're glad I'm done, Network with other bands in your genre. This state could really use a dose of comraderie. We musicians must support ourselves. Instead of trashing each other, give each other opportunities. We don't have an effective musician's union here, so our wages are going to stay stagnant.(average nightly pay at a bar in Colorado hasn't changed in 25 years.) Money can't be your motivator. You have to be cursed with musicianship, like me. We do art, use it for good. I SEE YOU

Professional drummer STILL looking for a new band. I have auditioned with several bands over the last few months, but I have not been able to find the right fit.

I am 40 years old (41 in a few weeks) and I have been playing professionally for over 22 years. I can play any style you want, and enjoy playing a wide variety of music. If your band has 40+ songs ready to go, or if you are already playing out and want to upgrade your rhythm section, I could be your guy. I can play rock, country, ska, reggae, blues, jazz, disco, metal, or whatever else you can think of. I have a full time job, a family, reliable transportation, own my equipment - Ludwig drums and Zildjian cymbals - and can provide my own PA if necessary. Also, I promise to be able to learn 40+ cover songs in 2 or 3 rehearsals.

I am looking for a band that understands that entertaining the crowd is more important than stroking their own egos. Believe me, I would much rather play a Rush song than Brick House, but, I understand that Brick House will be more fun because of the crowd's reaction to it.

Local drum and bugle corps is in need of a few trumpet players to play and march with us. We play "G" bugles, so you'd actually be playing a soprano bugle - similar to trumpet but in the key of G. We are also recruiting for other sections.

I am originally from Minneapolis but have traveled all over playing music. I've probably played over 600 live shows, 120+ in 2009, headlined music festivals, opened for a grip of folks including: huey lewis, puddle of mudd, tim mcgraw, chickenfoot, plus a bunch of others..

pro gear: sponsered by fender and westone, play out of a 4x12 super reverb n a 1x15 blues classic, I play on two american fenders, 10 or so pedals I use.

image: got it for whatever style your needin, deep down I'm a jamband kinda guy and would really like to find something like that. But i've played everything from country gigs to hip hop shows.

Basically leaving the group I'm in now because I feel I'm not playing much of the music that I want to. We play lots of r&b and a only a little bit of funk and I have a really minor role in the grand scheme of things. I'm also about 10-20 years younger than all the other members....I learned a lot of great stuff and already have stories for a lifetime, but I want to play the music I'm best at. Music with improvisation. whether rock, funk, even r&b/hip hop

Music I love:
Classic rock: pink floyd, david bowie, zappa, fun shit!
Jam bands: umphreys, lotus, phish, allman brothers, steve kimock
but really I like it all, as long as some songs have some freedom to them.

High Country Brass Drum and Bugle Corps, Colorado�s ONLY all-age Drum and Bugle Corps, is seeking to add members in ALL sections of the Corps and staff.

Have you marched drum corps, or marching band? Have you always wanted to march? Did you age out of a DCI Junior corps but still want to march? Come check out High Country Brass!

We are already working on the music and drill on the floor and have made great progress on our 2010 show - all that's missing is YOU!

Hornline
We have openings in all sections of the hornline, including:

Baritone/ Euphonium (we march both)

Contra (tuba)

We play �G� bugles. Players need not own their own equipment; we provide it for the members.

Drumline
We have openings on our snare drum, tenors, and cymbal lines. We also have openings in the pit percussion section.
We play on a new set of Pearl marching percussion equipment. Pit percussion is being added on a per unit basis.

Color Guard
We have openings in all sections of the color guard. Flags, rifles, sabers, and other fun (and top secret) equipment of our design.
