I'M A PARENT. IF YOU HAVE AN INFANT AND YOU NEED CARE FOR THEM, PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES AND READ WHAT SOME OF THESE OTHER MOMS ARE SAYING.

Some of the providers on here have a hidden agenda. Don't let a few providers scare you off or tell you this is not the place to discuss the needs of your child. This is EXACTLY what this board is for. I also echo the comments of another parent that posted here recently. This is a community childcare board. If you are a provider and don't like hearing the truth about what most concerned parents want or need, then get off OUR board and go post your job opening on the job board. I find it quite odd that providers who are supposedly watching several children, have so much time on their hands during the weekday to negatively comment on here about an informative post that a parent makes.

I also question why a provider who watches 3, 4, 5 or more toddlers and/or school age children, are also advertising on here that they have an opening for an infant! It's obvious that the ones doing this need the money and aren't just doing it because they "love children". That's a bunch of BS. Someone with that many children already in there care do not have the time to also provide quality, one-on-one full-time care for an infant as someone else with just 1 other infant (unless they are ignoring the toddlers and older children most of the time).

Providers -- If you have 3 or more older children, stop advertising for infants and focus on finding and caring for the age groups you already have.

Parents -- If you can't find someone on here that just cares for infants, maybe consider driving a little farther than you had planned on. It's just not worth it to worry about the care your infant is, or is not receiving while you have to work.

In our search on here for care for our infant, these are serious issues that we needed to think about before picking the right person. I can't thank you enough for your willingess to share. We have decided to take a step back and interview more people first, before making this decision. We almost chose a larger daycare home but having our infant around so many other kids just didn't feel right. This will most likely be our only child and it took several years to become parents. To the providers on here that want us parents to be silenced or go away so that you can just post your free ads, shame on you. We pay your salary and have just as much of a right to post on here as you do. The concerns that other parents have posted about here are valid concerns for ANY parent with a newborn. Bottom line is that parents do have options and don't have to settle for someone that watches several other kids or that they just don't feel comfortable with. Providers who come on here to try to discourage parents from posting here or to call us "IDIOTS" are doing nothing more than painting themselves in a negative light. If you really care about kids, then you would understand the real concerns some of these parents have, including myself.


This discussion is about infants, so ~ 6 weeks to 12 months old. This age group doesn't need to learn socialization skills -- they need one on one care, stimulation and cuddling from a provider. They really don't need to learn the sharing and playing nice with others until they are older, like closer to 2, so your post doesn't make sense. Again, we are talking about infants here.

Your math is incorrect -- It's not $48/day. Based on an average 10 hour day, the difference between $40/day and $60/day is actually $400 a month ($20/day x 5 days). Besides, price is NOT the issue. The amount of children in their care is.

And I completely disagree with unnecessarily exposing our babies to the deadly flu virus. I actually did speak with our pediatrician last month about this and he specifically recommended that I do not place her in a center or larger daycare home with school age kids. While we can't always eliminate their exposure to this (like shopping centers, malls), we can certain limit their exposure by choosing a daycare home or provider that does not also care for school age kids.

It's a personal choice that we all have to make for our children. You have a right to choose a larger center with alot of kids if that's what you want. I'm just glad that there are providers who have a very low ratio as that's what I feel is best right now for my little girl. I believe that she needs this much more than socialization skills during her first year of life.



Don't feel sorry for me. I can afford to pay more than $40 per day. But if your child is only socializing with one other child, then how are they learning to get along in a group? Where are they learning to share with others and play nicely in the sandbox with other kids? I specifically CHOSE to put my child in a home that had more kids so that he would have playmates of varied ages and genders. That's how kids learn not to be total brats in society. And $6 per hour is only $48 per day -- not much more than the $40 you are looking down on.

And if you think you are shielding your child from germs and doing them a favor, think again. Exposure to germs is what builds a child's healthy immune system - ask your pediatrician. Like our pediatrician said -- a germy baby is a healthy toddler. Do you keep your child shielded from the mall or the grocery store or going anywhere in public? If not, then you are exposing them to germs. Do you take a shower and change clothes before you touch your child after being at work all day? If not, then you are exposing them to the same germs you pick up at your office. You are only kidding yourself if you think otherwise.


TOTALLY agree. As parents, we need to share information with each other on here. These providers that have 4 or more kids simply don't have the time to also give quality individualized care to our infants. Especially if they have their own kids to take care of. Although I can see why they do it (more kids = more money), as a parent, the decision on who to pick is easy. I can't afford a full-time nanny at our home, but I can afford to pay someone who only has 1 other child in their care. I feel bad for the parents who can only afford to pay someone $40/day and end up putting their babies in homes that have 5 kids.

And I don't want my infant around school age kids because of the flu either. I would rather pay someone a fair wage of $6/hour ($60/day for 10 hours) to keep the ratio low. I don't want to have to worry about my baby girl getting quality care or getting sick while I'm at work. It's hard enough to leave her with someone else. Good advise - thanks!


Thank you. I'm also a mother and can certainly understand both sides here. I have had both good and bad experiences with childcare providers. Most parents I know have had a bad experience with a provider and no, that does not mean that all providers are bad. However, I think the mom was just trying to let others know about her experience which most parents on here would appreciate knowing about. Many parents can't afford more than $40 a day in this economy, but for those that can, finding someone that watches one or two other children is defanately worth it in my opinion. I wish there were more providers that offered this type ofcare, like a nanny, but doesn't charge as much. Some nanny's charge $12-15 an hour and I feel that's too high if they are also caring for another child (their own or someone else's). But I would gladly pay $6 -$7 an hour to someone with a lower ratio, like if they have just one or two, especially if they only take care of infants and not school age children. Another really important thing that we all have to consider is the H1N1 virus. I am very concerned about exposing my baby to the flu. Unfortunately, if the provider also cares for kids who are in school, they are going to be exposed to the germs. I am not willing to take that risk with my child.

You are right about this being a childcare community board. I do, however, disagree with the original poster. My son is in an in-home day care and I pay $40 a day. The woman that watches him watches several other children as well. He is extremely well taken care of. She feeds him breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. She watches him extra hours and doesn't charge me extra. She will give him a bath and put him in his jammies for me if I ask her to. She teaches the kids their numbers, letters, and reads to them. They don't spend the day watching TV. She has watched him on Saturdays so I can get my house cleaned without a toddler underfoot. Heck - she's even fed me dinner several times when I show up to get him. I have traded her child care and watched her son too. Our kids have had sleepovers with each other. We have taken the kids to the zoo and other things together. I know my child is happy in her care as well as safe and loved. I get pictures or videos of him text messaged to me during the day at least once or twice a week. So not all in-home day care providers are only in it for the money and not all of them will mistreat your child. Generalization is frequently a bad thing. Don't taint all providers with the same brush just because you had a bad experience with one.



This is a childcare community board for parents and providers, not just a place for providers to continually post FREE ads for childcare services. Last time I checked, we have a right to free speech in this country and your attempt to silence or censor parents from discussing childcare issues here is not appropriate. I am also a mom and appreciate hearing other parents advice, opinions and experiences on here in my search for childcare.

EVERYONE has a right to their opinion and just because you do not agree with it, does not give you the right to try to censor or delete their post. I find it interesting that this one particular mom below actually posted this warning last week and yet, it “mysteriously” disappeared in the search. I see that she posted it again, and was actually going to comment on it, but another provider flagged and deleted it, probably the same person that did it the last time.

To the person that deleted the posts, you obviously have either something to hide, or something to gain by trying to convince others on here that this mom is biased. Well I have news for you, I am biased too. I want the best care possible for my child and I happen to agree with them. Any other parents on here agree? If so, please speak up as this board is for parents to share their experiences too. While putting a child in the care of a provider who watches 4 or more children everyday might be less expensive and acceptable for some parents, I too prefer someone who has only 1 or 2 other children. I took my son out of a daycare home recently for this very reason.

This is a free board that allows parents and providers to post about their needs, availability and childcare in general. You don’t even have to pay to post your opening, which a lot of you do daily or several times a week.

Stop deleting informational posts just because you don’t agree with them. I for one, will repost this if it gets deleted again. Parents looking for childcare on this board have a right to know about the opinions and experiences of other parents with children, especially infants. And to the moms that shared their opinions and personal experience, thank you for posting the information below. It’s advise that many parents should really consider in their search.

INFANT CARE WARNING - PLEASE READ (Denver Metro)

As a mom, I feel that I have to warn other parents on here looking for a provider to care for their newborn or infant. Please beware of anyone offering to watch your infant in their home for just $35-$40 a day part-time or $150 a week full-time, licensed or not. We have found that most people charging so little are not the type of people you should trust with your baby, regardless of what their "references" tell you. Most people offering this type of "inexpensive/affordable care" are desperate and need the income to pay their bills. Trust me, they are not doing it because they love doing it. If they are not doing it for the money, then why do they need to watch so many children vs. just 1 or 2? Because they make $3,000 - $4,000 a month by watching 5 children -- which is more than most moms I know.

The stories I could share with you about our personal experience and of those some of our friends had with these type of providers would seriously make you think twice. More than once, we have found that our baby was left in their carseat for several hours, and in a dirty diaper, or not fed, because we were trying to save money. And just because a stay at home mom or someone that was previously a teacher or preschool worker now has a license, DOES NOT guarantee that they will provide quality care. And, if they are also caring for school aged children, then your infant is being exposed to the flu germs at their school.

While I agree that a home environment while they are very young is much better than a large center, if you can afford a nanny or someone older with no children of their own in their care, and just 1 or 2 other babies that they care for, you will have a much better chance of finding someone who will provide quality care for your baby. Your baby can't tell you about their day.

I'm not trying to scare anyone, but feel I need to share this information. Just please be careful in your search. There really are some great providers on here. Meet them in person at their home and trust your gut. And remember, cheapest isn't always best. You really do get what you pay for. Find someone who has a low ratio. Isn't the safety and care of your baby worth a few more dollars a day?

i would love to have that as a typical nanny salary. i myself am having to make barely ends meat (even though with my based experience i should typically be making 18-20 an hour) so i am at least able to pay rent but thats pretty much all i can pay. its hard to convince any family that their nanny should be making the same salary as one of the parents because they have to work. but i suppose the money you are paying for childcare/ a nanny is what you are expecting out of the arrangement.

If we ever expect to make a living, or at least keep some gas in the tank or food in the fridge, we are going to have to charge daycare prices like the day cares do or at least come close to what they charge. Then maybe the parents will want to use us since we are slightly cheaper. After all, in home care givers have more time to devote to the kids. I've got 35 years of experience and a teaching certificate and when I say I will watch a child for $150 a week for 60 hours, that comes to 2.50 an hour! That includes food. Would parents work for that?

I've worked in the best and worst, cheapest and most expensive centers in three states, one of them being Colorado in Parker and infants were $1375 a month at this Parker location, I won't mention the name. Parents think all they see is what is on camera. What they don't see are all the worms in diapers, the germs from mouthing toys and throwing the toys down, (having a runny nose, only makes it nastier as the snot goes with it) only to be picked up by another child right away and in the mouth it goes. The toys were not sanitized until the end of the day, most of the time, not sanitized at all because how can you possibly have time to do that when there are 20 infants and 3 caregivers? I've seen every single director lie to a touring parent about separating sick children from the well ones. THEY ARE NOT SEPARATED. Would any daycare hire a specific person to stay in a separate sick room? NO!

The private care givers/nannies such as myself, can offer things such as low ratio, having a say as to whether I will watch a sick child or not, having time to sanitize toys and just generally having much better control over the situations that arise, not to mention a lot of one on one time.
