I'm sure you're asking "My new HDTV looks great! What's wrong with it? Why does it need calibration?"
You wouldn't buy an air conditioner and leave the thermostat at 85 degrees! So why would you buy an expensive home theater set-up and never bother finding out what it can really look and sound like?
Sure, your new HDTV looks better than your old TV, but the manufacturer designed it to look very bad ON PURPOSE! That's right. They intentionally alter the colors, make the whites very blue-ish, and layer on a variety of "enhancements". They do this so the TV's bright image jumps out at you in the store's flourescent showroom.
The truth is all TV shows, movies, and videogames are produced under indentical standards called NTSC. Calibration matches your TV to these NTSC standards and effectively removes the TV completely turning it into a clear window.
Take a look at the following simulated images. The first image(uncalibrated) looks very bright and colorful, but it is also very unnatural, hard on the eyes, and not what the NBC cameras captured in the first place. This is not an actual picture of an uncalibrated HDTV, it is an exaggerated case of red push, high contrast, and high color temperature.
The second image(calibrated) shows exactly what the cameras captured and exactly what NBC wants you to see. It is much more natural, easier on the eyes, and shows the true colors of skintones and the cityscape background.
