General description:
The rate at which women gain fat (especially in the stomach region) and lose muscle increases at the time of the menopause. Why this occurs is not known, but it is thought to be related to the loss of estrogen, because postmenopausal women who take estrogen gain less fat and lose less lean mass than those who do not take estrogen.
Purpose of the study:
The purpose of this research study is to control estrogen levels of premenopausal women at low or normal levels for 5 months to understand how estrogen controls metabolism.
Qualifications to volunteer:
•Healthy women aged 18-45 years
•Non-smokers
•Regular menstrual cycles
•Not currently using hormonal contraceptives
Benefits for study volunteers include:
•Measurement of body composition and bone density
•Fitness testing
•Personalized and supervised exercise program
•Compensation will be provided for your time
This study is funded by the National Institute on Aging
