Our knowledge of life in heaven has been greatly increased by the spiritual experiences of Emanuel Swedenborg. Swedenborg was a Swedish scientist and philosopher who lived from 1688 to 1772.
Swedenborg was a uniquely enlightened man who brought a trained scientific intellect to bear upon the study of spiritual laws and principles. He published many books in which we can discover deep insight into the Christian religion and the life of heaven. Many leading thinkers and artists have been strongly influenced by Swedenborg’s writings.
Throughout his writings Swedenborg points us to the Lord Jesus Christ as the only object of our worship, and to the Scriptures as the source and authority for all heavenly teaching.
Swedenborg himself never preached, nor did he gather any congregation around him. He was content to publish his spiritual insights and leave people in their freedom to judge their truth. He respected people’s liberty and right to think for themselves.
Whilst we live on earth we have the opportunity to learn the principles of spiritual life, and grow into angelic people.
The angel which grows within us survives death to live a rich and fully human life in heaven. Entrance into the next world comes at the point of death, and life there is superior in every way to life on earth.
It is written that “To grow old in heaven is to grow young” . All in heaven return to the beauty and vigour of youth. They live life to the full enjoying the blessings of marriage, the satisfaction of useful service, the joys of friendship, the delights of relaxation, and the happiness of worshipping the Lord.
Heaven is an inner state of spirit. It can be experienced, at least in part, here on earth. It is after death, however, that we can enter fully into heaven. Even then we shall find that the quality of heaven will increase for us to eternity
